Shipment Cost Breakdown Dashboards

About the Shipment Cost Breakdown dashboards
The Shipment Cost Breakdown dashboards provide a detailed breakdown of rate shop selections, including base rates and categorized surcharges. All surcharges have been standardized to ensure consistent comparisons across carriers. Key breakdowns include carriers, service methods, and surcharges.
There are two Shipment Cost Breakdown dashboards:
- Shipment Cost Breakdown. This dashboard displays shipment costs, with breakdowns by carrier and surcharge type.
- Shipment Cost Breakdown Data Export. This data table allows filtering by carrier, carrier service method, surcharge type, surcharge name, surcharge cost, and volume of rates selected. This dashboard features two tables: one providing aggregated data for the trailing 90 days, and the other offering detailed shipment-level information, with each charge presented as a separate row, for the previous week. You can export filtered data to a CSV file.

View Shipment Cost Breakdown dashboards
This section includes instructions for each of the Shipment Cost Breakdown dashboards as well as default settings, metrics, and data nuances for these reports.
Filters for each dashboard are defined in the following table.
Filter name | Description |
---|---|
Carrier ID | Name of the shipping carrier (e.g., USPS, UPS, FedEx) |
Carrier Service Method | The shipping method offered by the carrier (e.g., overnight, ground) |
Surcharge Tier 1 Category | Surcharges are categorized to standardize and enable meaningful comparisons. These include additional handling, delivery area, signature, Saturday delivery, hazmat, import/export, and other modifiers. |
Terms used in these dashboards are defined in the following table.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Average Cost Per Package (CPP) | This metric includes both the base rate and applicable surcharges. Surcharge types are defined in this table. The average CPP is calculated based only on the shipments to which the specific surcharge is applied. |
Base Rate | Standard shipping charge based on weight, size, and destination |
Fuel | Adjustments reflecting fluctuations in fuel costs |
Additional Handling | Charges for shipments needing special handling due to size, weight, or packaging |
Delivery Area Surcharge | Fees for deliveries to remote or hard-to-reach locations |
Signature | Costs for shipments requiring recipient verification |
Saturday Delivery | Fees for deliveries made on Saturdays |
Hazmat | Charges for shipping hazardous materials |
Import/Export | Fees for international trade-related shipments |
Modifier | An artificial rate applied to influence carrier selection based on configurations specific to a customer |
Shipment Cost Breakdown Dashboard
While the default setting is a label creation period of the last seven weeks, grouped by week, you can adjust the dates in the top-right corner and apply filters across the top of the dashboard.
For each filter, this dashboard provides the following reports:
- Selected Rates Volume Summary
- Average Cost Per Package (CPP) Summary
- Rate Shop Volume and Average Cost Per Package
- Average Cost Per Package Breakdown
- Applied Surcharge Rate CPP by Surcharge Type
- Base Rate Cost Percent
- Comparison of Average Base Rate and Average Cost Per Package Over Time
- Percentage Average Base Rate of Total Average CPP by Carrier by Week
- Average Base Rate CPP vs. Total Average CPP
You can also click on specific visuals (e.g., Comparison of Average Base Rate and Average Cost Per Package Over Time) to filter the rest of the dashboard accordingly.
Shipment Cost Breakdown Data Export
As with the Shipment Cost Breakdown Dashboard, you can adjust the reporting dates in the top-right corner and apply filters via the drop-downs across the top of the dashboard.
Then you can export the data table as a CSV or Excel file, with the following restrictions:
- Domo only supports exporting one million rows at a time.
- Data is not available at the shipment ID level.
Default settings
Each dashboard defaults to a label creation period of the last seven weeks, grouped by week. You can adjust the time period filter for any period after 1/1/2023.
Metrics
The following metrics are provided for the Shipment Cost Breakdown dashboards:
- Selected rate volume. The total number of rates selected within the given time period; defined by the creation date of the carrier selection record
- Selected rate cost. The estimated cost at the time of rate selection
- Average cost per package (CPP). Calculated by dividing the selected rate cost by the selected rate volume; this dashboard highlights two types of CPP calculations.
- Impact on total average CPP. Measures the overall impact of a surcharge by dividing the total surcharge cost by all rate selections and provides insight into how the surcharge influences average total CPP across all selected rates
- Applied surcharge CPP. Focuses on the surcharge cost only for rates selected where the surcharge was applied and offers a targeted view of the direct cost impact of the surcharge
Data nuances
The following data nuances apply to the Shipment Cost Breakdown dashboards:
- All dashboards are based on a selected rate volume that is determined by the creation date of the carrier selection record.
- This analysis excludes uncosted shipments, meaning those for which labels were printed without Shipium calculating the cost.
- The dataset reflects trailing 90 days but does not contain shipment-level details. A data export dashboard offers detailed shipment-level information for the previous week, with each row representing either a base rate or a surcharge.
