About carrier surcharges
Carrier surcharges are extra costs that carriers assess for shipping packages, typically to cover fluctuating operational expenses. Peak season surcharges, also known as demand surcharges, are temporarily added by carriers to their base shipping rates during periods of high shipping demand. This document provides information about carrier peak/demand surcharges and guidance to configure carrier surcharges for your organization's Shipium account.
Carrier contract required for configurationThe Shipium platform supports configuration of carrier surcharges for your organization's account. However, to configure carrier surcharges for your organization within the Shipium platform, you first must have an established contract with the desired carrier. You can find more in Carrier Contracts.

Shipium's supported carriers are listed in the following table, with a designation of whether they implement peak/demand season surcharges. Canada Post
Canada Post does not add new peak surcharges. Instead, it adjusts three existing surcharges upward for the season. Amounts are in Canadian dollars.

The Oversize and Unpackaged surcharges are not combined. An item that is both oversized and unpackaged is charged a single fee.
Cirro (GOFO)
From October 4, 2026, to January 17, 2027, GOFO applies a peak season increase to products that include postal delivery. The increase applies across all weight brackets rather than as a separate per-package fee.

DHL eCommerce
DHL eCommerce applies peak season surcharges in three phases. Amounts are in USD per package and vary by product, package weight, and destination zone.

DHL Express
DHL Express applies demand surcharges during periods of high demand, determined by DHL. International charges are assessed in USD per pound of billing weight and vary by the shipment's origin and destination region. Domestic charges vary by origin country. The fuel surcharge applies to the demand surcharge. Demand surcharges apply cumulatively when a shipment or an individual piece meets more than one of the specified criteria.
Time Definite International
From October 1, 2026, to February 5, 2027, the following per-pound charges apply to DHL Express Worldwide, DHL Express 12:00, DHL Express 10:30, DHL Express 9:00, DHL Express Envelope, and DHL Express Breakbulk, including the Import and 3rd Country equivalents of each.

Day Definite International
From October 1, 2026, to February 5, 2027, a flat $0.07 per lb demand surcharge applies to all Day Definite International services, which include DHL Economy Select and DHL Economy Breakbulk and their Import and 3rd Country equivalents.
Time Definite Domestic
From November 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026, a fixed demand surcharge applies to all Time Definite Domestic services, which include DHL Express Domestic, DHL Express Domestic 9:00, DHL Express Domestic 10:30, and DHL Express Domestic 12:00. DHL publishes a separate amount for each origin country. The amounts for the United States and Mexico are:

Destination regions use the same membership as the origin regions, with two differences. South Asia and Rest of Asia are combined into a single Asia region, and Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific island territories are separated into Oceania.

FedEx Canada applies demand surcharges to intra-Canada Express and Ground shipments and to international package shipments. Oversize, additional handling, and unauthorized charges carry an additional demand amount on top of the base surcharge. A separate Demand — Residential Delivery Charge applies to enterprise customers above a weekly volume threshold. All amounts are in Canadian dollars.

The demand surcharge is assessed in addition to the base surcharge amount and appears as a separate line item on the invoice.
FedEx Express international non-standard shipments
A non-standard shipment is any shipment meeting the criteria or conditions for the Additional Handling Surcharge, the Oversize Charge, or the Unauthorized Charge.

FedEx Express international demand surcharge
FedEx Canada applies a demand surcharge to international Express shipments leaving Canada, calculated per pound and varying by region. The surcharge is effective September 21, 2026. FedEx reserves the right to reassess or reinstate it at its sole discretion.

FedEx Canada demand – Residential delivery charge
This charge applies from October 26, 2026, to January 17, 2027, to enterprise customers who ship more than 7,000 weekly average packages, counting FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Canada domestic residential and commercial volume together. It is assessed in addition to the customer's Residential Delivery Charge, and any contracted discount on the Residential Delivery Charge does not apply to it. For invoicing, the two are combined.
The amount is set by a demand factor: weekly average packages shipped during a measurement period, divided by the weekly average shipped between March 2 and March 29, 2026, multiplied by 100. The demand factor is determined separately for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground. Two measurement periods apply. Volume from September 28 through October 11, 2026 sets the charge applied October 26 through December 6, 2026. Volume from November 9 through November 22, 2026 sets the charge applied December 7, 2026 through January 17, 2027. Demand — Residential delivery charge
This charge applies to enterprise customers who ship more than 20,000 residential and FedEx Ground Economy packages, totaled across US domestic shipments, during a calculation week. It is assessed in addition to the standard Residential Delivery Charge, and any contracted discount or cap on the Residential Delivery Charge does not apply to it.
The amount is set by a peaking factor: the residential and FedEx Ground Economy packages shipped during a calculation week, divided by the weekly average shipped between June 1 and June 28, 2026, multiplied by 100. A two-week lag separates the calculation week from the application week in which the charge appears. For a calculation week containing a holiday, weekly volume is adjusted for the shorter operating week by multiplying by 5 and dividing by 4.

Demand Over Max Limits and Demand Unauthorized apply to packages with a billable weight over 150 pounds, a length over 108 inches, or a combined length plus girth over 165 inches. OnTrac does not accept these packages for carriage and reserves the right to refuse them, but assesses the surcharge if one is found in the network during transit.

SpeedX applies peak surcharges from October 15, 2026, to January 15, 2027. Charges are assessed per package, in addition to the base rate.
Peak surcharges do not stack with each other. When a package meets more than one of the criteria below, only the highest applicable peak surcharge is assessed. Peak surcharges do apply in addition to SpeedX's year-round surcharges.

Customers billed for more than 20,000 packages in a single week are assessed under the higher volume shipper schedule in place of the standard per-package amounts above. The surcharge applies weekly to each service level, based on that week's volume as a percentage of the baseline. The highest applicable amount applies to every package in that week at that service level, not only to the volume above the threshold.
The baseline is the customer's average weekly volume for the applicable service level for June 2026 (May 31, 2026 through June 27, 2026). If average weekly volume from August 30, 2026 through September 26, 2026 is less than 80% of the June 2026 average, the later period is used as the baseline instead.

UPS Surge Emergency Fee - US
UPS assesses Surge Emergency Fees on international shipments to and from the United States. UPS states that the term Surge Emergency Fee includes Surge Fee and that the terms are interchangeable. The fee is based on the billable weight of the shipment and is itself subject to the fuel surcharge. More than one Surge Emergency Fee can apply to a single shipment depending on its characteristics.
Fees applied to accessorial charges
These fees apply to US export shipments that meet the conditions for an Additional Handling Charge, a Large Package Surcharge, or an Over Maximum Limits Charge. They apply in addition to the underlying accessorial charge, not in place of it.

UPS Mail Innovations applies peak season fees from October 4, 2026, to January 17, 2027.

The Peak Season Demand Surcharge is included in your base rates and is reflected on your invoice rather than shown as a separate charge.
USPS
USPS does not assess a peak season demand surcharge. Instead, it raises the published prices of certain package services for the season, so the increase is inside the price of the label rather than on a separate invoice line.
For the 2026 holiday season, temporary prices took effect at 12 a.m. CT on October 4, 2026 and remain in place until 12 a.m. CT on January 17, 2027. They apply to retail and commercial domestic Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select. No other USPS products or services are affected.
