Shipment Volume Dashboard
Analyze outbound shipment volume trends across carriers, service methods, and geographic destinations to understand distribution patterns and inform carrier strategies.
About the Shipment Volume dashboard
The Shipment Volume dashboard provides outbound shipment volume visibility and trend analysis across the primary cost drivers (base rates, surcharges, zone mix, weight, and dimensional characteristics). It enables you to understand absolute transportation costs, track cost trends over time, and identify the factors driving cost changes, supporting carrier mix optimization and contract renegotiation decisions.
Filters
Filter Name | Filter Description |
|---|---|
Effective Ship Date | A range of time must be selected for the effective ship date of shipments (e.g., when each was expected to be handed off to a carrier). |
Carrier | One or more carriers can be selected to show the metrics on the dashboard for only those carriers. |
Carrier Method | One or more carrier methods can be selected to show the metrics on the dashboard for only those carrier methods. |
Fulfillment Name | One or more fulfillment names (fulfillment contexts) can be selected to show the metrics on the dashboard for only those fulfillment names. |
Tenant Name | One or more tenant names can be selected to show the metrics on the dashboard for only those tenant names. |
Timezone | A timezone for reporting must be selected for use when doing time calculations (such as the effective ship date). |
Sections and metrics
Critical Volume Metrics
This section provides high-level KPI (key performance indicator) metrics showing the most recent complete period's shipment volume performance.
Total Volume (Prior Full Week)
For the set of filters that have been selected, this metric shows the total number of shipments that were shipped during the most recently completed full week. This is calculated by summing the Shipment Count measure aggregated at the weekly level. You should interpret this as the absolute shipment volume for the prior complete week, which provides a stable baseline for week-over-week comparisons. The KPI visualization includes comparison to the previous period and shows anomaly detection to highlight unusual volume patterns.
This metric always reflects the full week prior to the end of the selected time period, regardless of filter settings.
Volume Trends
This section visualizes shipment volume patterns over time to identify trends, seasonality, and anomalies in shipping activity.
Shipment Count Trend
For the set of filters that have been selected, this metric displays the weekly shipment count over the selected time period. This is calculated by summing the Shipment Count measure and grouping by week of the Effective Ship Date. The area chart visualization shows the total volume trend with data labels enabled for each point. You should interpret this to understand volume trajectory, identify peak shipping periods, spot unusual volume drops or spikes, and assess overall volume stability. The green shaded area represents the cumulative shipment volume, making it easy to visually compare different weeks.
Volume by Carrier and Method
This section provides visibility into your shipment volume distribution across carriers and their specific service methods.
Total Volume by Carrier
For the set of filters that have been selected, this metric displays a donut chart showing the total shipment volume distributed across all carriers in your network. Each segment represents a carrier, with the size proportional to the number of shipments they handled and the percentage of total volume clearly labeled. This visualization helps you quickly identify your primary carriers, understand carrier concentration (which may create operational risk if one carrier experiences service disruptions), and evaluate whether your volume distribution aligns with your carrier contract volume commitments or preferred carrier strategies.
Total Volume by Carrier Method
For the set of filters that have been selected, this metric displays a donut chart breaking down shipment volume by specific carrier service methods. Each segment represents a distinct service level, showing both the shipment count and percentage of total volume. This granular view helps you understand which specific services within each carrier's portfolio you're utilizing most heavily, identify opportunities to shift volume between service levels for cost optimization, and validate that your service method selection aligns with your delivery speed requirements and cost targets. This metric is particularly valuable when evaluating whether expedited services are being used appropriately or if opportunities exist to downgrade to more economical options without compromising customer commitments.
Volume by Geography
This section breaks down shipment volume by destination geography to understand where shipments are being delivered and identify geographic concentration or expansion patterns.
US States by Total Shipment Count
For the set of filters that have been selected, this metric shows the distribution of shipment volume across US destination states (filtered to US destinations only). This is calculated by summing the Shipment Count measure grouped by Destination State where the Destination Country is "US". The choropleth (geographic heat map) visualization uses a red color gradient where darker/more intense colors indicate higher shipment volumes to specific states. You should interpret this to identify high-volume states for domestic shipping, understand regional shipping patterns, optimize fulfillment center network placement, and inform regional carrier contract negotiations based on state-level volume concentration.
Countries by Total Shipment Count
For the set of filters that have been selected, this metric shows the distribution of shipment volume across destination countries. This is calculated by summing the Shipment Count measure grouped by Destination Country. The choropleth visualization uses a red color gradient where darker/more intense colors indicate higher shipment volumes. You should interpret this to identify primary markets, understand international vs. domestic shipment distribution, spot emerging geographic markets, and assess geographic diversification. This helps inform carrier negotiation strategies based on geographic mix.
